겐트대학교는 200년 전통을 가진 벨기에 최고의 명문 대학으로 수 많은 노벨상 수상자와 학문의 창시자를 배출하였으며, 11개 단과대학 125개 학과에서 4만여명의 학부생과 3천여명의 박사과정 학생들이 공부하고 있는 연구중심대학입니다. 겐트대학교의 교육철학은 Dare to think, 과감하게 알고자 하는 창의적인 지식 연구자를 길러내는 것으로, 기존의 질서에 안주하기 보다는 새로운 것에 도전하는 학생들을 격려하고 존중하는 대학입니다. 창의적인 교육과 과학적 연구를 통해 사회에 기여하고 다양성을 포용하는 인재를 양성하는 일에 가치를 두고 있습니다. 국제화를 목표로 유럽대학으로는 최초로 한국에 확장 캠퍼스를 설립하였습니다.

‘Dare to Think’ is the credo of Ghent University: critical and independent minds study, carry out research, and work at Ghent University. The phase is the literal translation of Sapere aude that was originally used by the Roman poet Horace and was also the main idea of enlightened critical philosophers such as Immanuel Kant.
‘Dare to Think’는 겐트대학교의 신념을 표현하는 말입니다. 독립적이고 비판적인 자세를 가진 인재들이 공부하고 연구하는 곳이 겐트대학교라는 의미입니다. ‘Dare to Think’는 로마시대 시인 호라티우스가 ‘서간집’(기원전 20년)에서 쓴 표현을 인용한 것으로 라틴어 ‘Sapere aude’의 번역입니다. 이 문구는 계몽주의 철학자 임마누엘 칸트가 그의 저서 ‘계몽이란 무엇인가?’ (Answering the Question: What Is Enlightenment?)’ (1784년)에서 인용하면서 계몽주의의 표어로 사용된 표현이기도 합니다.
The education concept of Ghent University is Creative Knowledge Development. The aim here is to shape students who become experts, who deal with knowledge in an innovative manner, who have an uninhibited place in the world and an attitude of unremitting scientific curiosity. Education at Ghent University means a combination of knowledge and ability, of general competence and specialised expertise, a balanced mix of wisdom and science.
