Job Position
Ghent University Global Campus in South Korea has a vacancy for a Research & Teaching Assistant in the field of biotech data science, starting on March 1, 2026 (negotiable). This is a one-year full-time position, renewable up to three times (subject to favorable evaluation), for a maximum total duration of six years.

The PhD candidate will be enrolled as a doctoral researcher at the Center for Biosystems and Biotech Data Science at Ghent University Global Campus in Korea, under the supervision of two to three doctoral advisors. In addition, the PhD candidate will have the opportunity to spend part of their doctoral research trajectory at the home campus in Ghent (IDLab – ELIS). For non-Korean applicants, rent-free student accommodation and an annual travel budget are provided. Ghent University Global Campus is an equal opportunities employer.

The PhD candidate is expected to dedicate approximately 50% of their time to supporting the department in teaching undergraduate courses in informatics and bioinformatics. These responsibilities will primarily involve supervising exercise sessions and computer labs, assisting in the development of new course materials (e.g., assignments and exam questions), grading assignments and exams, and supervising annual bachelor’s projects as well as occasional internships and master’s theses.

In addition to teaching duties, the PhD candidate is expected to conduct research in the field of (deep) machine learning, with applications in either biomedical image understanding (e.g., surgical video analysis in collaboration with Ghent University Hospital) or biomolecule design and characterization. Within the first six months of the appointment, the PhD candidate is required to prepare a doctoral research proposal of approximately ten pages. This proposal should include a literature review, clearly defined research objectives, a detailed work plan (including work packages and a Gantt chart), and a publication plan. Approval of this proposal by the GUGC Campus Council is a prerequisite for doctoral enrollment and the first contract extension.

PhD candidates with a strong academic background and demonstrated expertise in biomolecule design and characterization may be eligible to transition to a four-year doctoral research trajectory within a European project (subject to funding approval). This project focuses on the de novo design of enzymes for the cost-effective production of biodegradable food packaging and will involve regular travel between Korea and the EU to present and discuss results.

The targeted doctoral degree is the degree of Doctor in Computer Science Engineering, awarded by the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture at Ghent University in Belgium. Further information about this doctoral degree can be found at https://www.ugent.be/ea/en/for-phd-candidates-and-students. Additional details on pursuing a doctoral degree at Ghent University can be found at https://www.ugent.be/en/research/doctoralresearch.

Note: Ghent University places strong emphasis on the development of both hard skills and transferable soft skills throughout the doctoral trajectory. The latter include communication skills, research and valorization, leadership and personal efficiency, and career management.

Important: Candidates holding a non-Belgian Master’s degree must undergo a diploma assessment. This process requires demonstrating the equivalence of at least 18 ECTS credits from their educational curriculum in general courses and/or courses related to the main subject of a Belgian Master of Science in Engineering Technology (excluding the master’s dissertation).
