겐트대-인천시, 해양·바이오·환경 연구, 인재 양성 협력 맞손

17일, 겐트대학교(총장 페트라 드 수터)와 인천광역시(시장 유정복)가 해양·바이오·환경 연구와 인재 양성 상호협력을 위한 업무협약을 체결했다.
인천광역시청에서 열린 이번 협약식에는 페트라 드 수터(Petra De Sutter) 겐트대학교 총장, 유정복 인천광역시장, 그리고 한태준 겐트대학교 글로벌캠퍼스 총장 등 관계자가 참석한 가운데 진행됐다.
이번 협약은 페트라 총장의 한국 방문을 계기로 이뤄졌으며, 겐트대와 인천시가 해양 과학, 환경, 바이오 기술 연구 등에서 포괄적 협력을 강화하고 인천시 공무원의 장기 국외 교육훈련 프로그램 협력을 통한 인재 양성을 목적으로 진행됐다.
페트라 드 수터 총장은 “우리 대학의 연구 능력과 인천시의 지원을 바탕으로 기후 위기 대응과 바이오 연구의 혁신을 이끌 것”이라며 “이번 협약이 양국 간 과학기술 협력의 새로운 이정표가 되길 기대한다”고 말했다.
같은 날, 겐트대는 국립환경과학원과 미세플라스틱 연구 협력에 대한 업무협약을 체결하기도 했다.
겐트대학교는 생명과학 및 바이오 분야에서 세계 30위권의 명성을 자랑하는 벨기에 국립대학으로 지난 2014년부터 인천 송도에 글로벌캠퍼스를 설립해 인재 양성과 연구에 힘쓰고 있다. 또한 산하기관으로 세계적인 해양 융복합 연구소인 '마린유겐트(소장 콜린 얀센, Colin Janssen)'의 분원, '마린유겐트 코리아'를 지난 2024년 설립해 대한민국의 실정에 맞는 다양한 해양 연구에 전념하고 있다. //끝//

The signing ceremony, held at Incheon Metropolitan City Hall, was attended by key officials, including Ghent University Rector Petra De Sutter, Incheon Metropolitan City Mayor Jeong bok Yoo, and Ghent University Global Campus President Tae jun Han.
The agreement was prompted by Rector De Sutter's visit to Korea. It aims for comprehensive cooperation between Ghent University and Incheon City, encompassing education, research, and technology exchange in areas such as marine science, environmental research, and Applied Biotechnology. It also seeks to nurture talent through cooperation on long-term overseas education and training programs.
Petra De Sutter, Prof. Dr. Rector, stated, “Based on our university’s research capabilities and Incheon City’s support, we will lead innovation in climate crisis response and bio-research,” adding, “I expect this agreement to become a new milestone for scientific and technological cooperation between the two countries.”
On the same day, Ghent University also signed an MOU with the National Institute of Environmental Research for cooperation in microplastics research.
Ghent University is a Belgian national university that boasts a global reputation, ranking in the top 30 worldwide in the field of life sciences and bio-technology. Since 2014, it has been dedicated to nurturing talent and conducting research by establishing a Global Campus in Songdo, Incheon. Furthermore, it established 'Marine@UGent Korea,' a branch of the world-renowned marine convergence research institute 'Marine@UGent'(Chairman Colin Janssen), in 2024 to focus on various marine research tailored to the specific context of the Republic of Korea. //End//
