안녕하세요. 겐트대 새내기 김형우입니다.
저는 거창대성고등학교를 졸업하고 생명공학 중에서 뇌공학을 공부하고 싶은 꿈나무입니다. 심리적으로 어려운 분들을 돕기 위해 학생 초기 창업팀 Tremental의 리더로도 활동하고 있습니다.
▲ 발명대회에서 대통령상을 수상하셨다고 들었습니다. 해당 수상 내용과 이 경험이 본인의 진로 선택이나 학문적 관심에 어떤 영향을 주었는지 말씀해 주세요.
‘학생발명전시회’에서 ‘주행풍을 이용한 이동수단용 연비 개선 및 먼지 집진장치’를 만들었습니다. 이 발명은 유체역학뿐만 아니라 환경, 자동차에 관련된 지식도 필요합니다. 서로 다른 지식에 과학적 변주를 주면서 연구하는 것에 강한 흥미를 느꼈습니다. 이렇게 생긴 과학에 대한 관심이 심리적으로 어려운 분들을 돕고자 하는 저의 목표와 결부되면서 자연스럽게 생명공학을 배우자는 학문적 계획도 수립할 수 있었습니다.
저는 사실 대통령상을 성과로 생각하지 않습니다. 다음 목표에 도전하기 위한 이정표라고 생각합니다. 겐트대 선택도 마찬가지입니다. 겐트대 글로벌캠퍼스는 국내 유일의 유럽대학으로 높은 수준의 생명공학을 배울 수 있는 곳입니다. 이곳 겐트에서 공부하는 것도 저를 증명할 수 있는 하나의 이정표가 될 수 있다고 생각합니다.
▲ 여러 대학 중 겐트대학교 글로벌캠퍼스를 선택한 이유를 설명해주세요.
두 가지 요소가 제게 매력적으로 다가왔습니다.
첫째, 겐트대의 일원이 된다는 것은 생명공학 분야에서 모든 도전을 가능하게 하는 능력을 얻을 수 있겠다고 확신했습니다. 겐트대는 생명·바이오 분야에서 세계적 권위를 자랑하는 명문대학입니다. 수준 높은 교육 커리큘럼과 연구 인프라를 경험하고 재학 중 한 한기를 현대 과학의 본고장이라고 할 수 있는 유럽 본교에서 수학할 수 있다는 것이 큰 매력으로 다가왔습니다.
둘째, Dare to Think라는 표어가 무척 마음에 들었습니다. 겐트에서 공부하며 ‘담대하게 생각하라’라는 겐트의 가치관과 동화된다면 무엇이든 할 수 있겠다고 생각하면서 가슴이 뛰었고 마침내 겐트대에 지원하게 되었습니다.
▲ 학교에 대해 알고 있는 것, 그리고 캠퍼스에 왔을 때 어떤 느낌이 들었나요?
과학자가 되고 싶은 꿈나무들에게 정말 좋은 교육 커리큘럼을 가진 학교라고 생각됩니다. 이론과 실습의 비율이 50:50으로 실습 기회가 풍부하고, 교원 1인당 학생의 비율도 좋은 편이라 교수님과 즉각적인 소통이 활발하다는 것이 마음에 들었습니다. 입학 전부터 관심 분야에 대한 궁금증이 생겨 담당 과목 교수님께 문의드렸고 상세한 의견을 받기도 했습니다.
캠퍼스에 방문했을 때는 기숙사와 학교의 거리, 다양한 시설이 공부에 집중하기 좋은 환경이라는 인상을 받았습니다. 이에 더해, 형용할 수 없지만 공부하는 분위기가 물신 느껴졌습니다. 이건 겐트대에 직접 오시면 누구나 공감할 수 있습니다.
▲ 240학점 이수, 100% 영어 강의 등 졸업까지 공부를 많이 해야 할 것으로 예상되는데, 이에 대해 어떻게 준비하고 계신가요?
더욱 공부를 열심히 해야 한다는 것을 잘 알고 있고 자신 있습니다. 저는 우선 화학과 영어가 앞으로 학업에 매우 중요하다고 생각했습니다. 그래서 화학과 영어를 중심으로 열심히 공부하고 있습니다. 고등학교 화학 교재를 복습하고 대학교 수준의 화학에 대해서도 자료를 찾아가며 공부하고 있습니다. 또한 영어로 글을 쓰는 연습을 꾸준히 하고 AI를 활용해 학습하면서 수준 높은 강의에 적응할 수 있도록 나름대로 최선을 다하고 있습니다.
▲ 대학 생활 중 해보고 싶은 것, 그리고 앞으로 원하는 진로나 구체적인 계획이 있나요?
저의 최종 목표는 생명공학 분야 연구자 혹은 교수가 되어 제가 한 연구로 심리적으로 어려운 분들을 돕는 것입니다. 이를 위해, 높은 비중의 실습 수업으로 생명공학을 깊이 있게 공부할 수 있는 겐트대에 입학을 결심했습니다.
심리적으로 어려운 분들을 돕고 싶다는 꿈을 이루기 위해 고등학교 시절 발명대회와 대한민국 인재상 수상 경험을 바탕으로 정신건강 디지털 헬스케어 아이디어를 실현하는 Tremental이라는 팀을 만들어 리더로 활동하고 있습니다. 최근에는 BCI(Brain Computer Interface, 뇌-컴퓨터 인터페이스) 기술 분야에도 관심이 생겨 장차 관련 분야를 공부하고 싶기도 합니다.
▲ 입시를 준비하고 있는 후배들에게 하고 싶은 말이 있나요?
겐트대 입시 준비를 하며 느낀 점은 문제를 푸는 ‘스킬’보다 ‘진짜 이해하는 능력’입니다. 즉 ‘입시를 위한 학습 능력’보다는 ‘실제 대학에서 공부할 수 있는 능력’이 중요하다는 것입니다. 입시를 위한 공부가 아닌 내가 실제로 대학에 입학해 공부한다고 가정하고 준비한다면 충분히 좋은 결과를 만들 수 있다고 생각합니다.
이러한 부분도 국내대학이 아닌 겐트대를 선택하게 된 이유입니다. 겐트대는 수능 성적 중심의 학생 선발이 아닌 학생 개개인의 실제 학업 역량과 잠재력을 평가합니다. 수학·과학·영어 역량이 충분하다면 누구에게나 기회가 주어집니다. 모집 정원이 충원될 때까지 지원을 받는 ‘롤링 어드미션(Rolling Admission)’ 제도를 운영하고 있기 때문에 후배들이 부담 없이 지원했으면 좋겠습니다.

겐트대에서 습득할 지혜는 제가 앞으로 경험할 인생과 학문의 과정에 큰 도움이 될 것이라 믿어 의심치 않습니다.
선택의 연속인 삶 속에서 겐트대에서 학문뿐만 아니라 지혜를 터득하려는 태도로 열심히 공부 하겠습니다. 그리고 그 지혜를 기반으로 제 목표를 이루는 것과 동시에 사회에 기여하고 더 나은 세상을 만드는 연구자로 성장하겠습니다. //끝//

▲ Please give a brief self-introduction.
Hello. I am Hyeongwoo Kim, a new student at GUGC. I graduated from Geochang Daeseong High School and aspire to study brain engineering within biotechnology. I also lead Team ‘Tremental’, a student start-up team, to help people experiencing psychological difficulties.
▲ We heard you won the Presidential Award at an Korea Student Invention Exhibition. Please describe the award-winning project and how that experience influenced your career choice or academic interests.
At the Korea Student Invention Exhibition, I developed a “fuel-efficiency improvement and dust collection device for vehicles using driving wind.” This invention required knowledge not only of fluid mechanics but also of environmental science and automotive engineering. I found strong interest in researching by applying scientific variation across different fields. That scientific interest naturally combined with my goal of helping people in psychological distress, leading me to plan to study biotechnology. I do not view the Presidential Award as an endpoint, but as a milestone toward my next goal. Choosing GUGC was the same, GUGC is the only European university campus in Korea where I can learn high-level biotechnology. Studying here can be another milestone in proving myself.
▲ Why did you choose GUGC among many universities?
Two factors appealed to me. First, becoming a member of Ghent University promised the ability to take on any challenge in biotechnology. Ghent University is a prestigious institution with global authority in life and bio sciences. The opportunity to experience a high-quality curriculum and research infrastructure, and to study one semester at the European main campus was highly attractive. Second, I was drawn to the slogan “Dare to Think.” I felt that if I aligned with Ghent’s value of thinking boldly, anything would be possible, which excited me and ultimately led me to apply.
▲ What did you know about the school, and what impression did you get when you visited the campus?
I believe it is an excellent university for aspiring scientists. The curriculum offers a roughly 50:50 balance of theory and practice, providing abundant hands-on opportunities, and the student-to-faculty ratio is favorable, enabling immediate communication with professors. Even before enrollment, I contacted a faculty member in my field of interest and received detailed guidance. When I visited the campus, the proximity between the dormitories and academic buildings and the variety of facilities gave the impression of an environment conducive to focused study. Additionally, there was an indescribable but palpable academic atmosphere that anyone visiting GUGC can sense.
▲ Graduation requires 240 credits and 100% English instruction; how are you preparing for the heavy study load?
I understand that I must study harder and I am ready. I focus on chemistry and English, which I consider vital for my studies. I am reviewing high school chemistry textbooks and seeking university-level chemistry materials. I also practice writing in English regularly and use AI to assist my learning so I can adapt to advanced Classes.
▲ What would you like to try during university life, and what specific career plans do you have?
My ultimate goal is to become a researcher or professor in biotechnology, producing research that helps people with psychological difficulties. To achieve this, I decided to enroll at Ghent University, which offers extensive hands-on classes for in-depth study. Based on my Student Invention Exhibition experiences, I formed and lead Team ‘Tremental’ to realize a mental health digital healthcare idea. Recently, I have become interested in BCI (Brain–Computer Interface) technology and may study in that area in the future.
▲ Any advice for high school students preparing for admission?
From my experience preparing for GUGC, I found that the ability to truly understand matters more than test-taking ‘skills’. In other words, what matters is the ability to study at university rather than study tactics for entrance exams. If you prepare as if you are actually going to study at the university, you can achieve good results. This is also why I chose Ghent University. Ghent University evaluates actual academic ability and potential rather than relying primarily on standardized test scores. If you have sufficient competency in math, science, and English, anyone has an opportunity. The university operates a rolling admission system, accepting applications until quotas are filled, so I hope high school students apply without undue burden.
▲ Finally, please give a closing remark as a new student.
I firmly believe that the wisdom I acquire at Ghent University will greatly help my life and academic journey ahead. In a life of continuous choices, I will study diligently at Ghent to attain not only academic knowledge but also wisdom, and based on that wisdom I will pursue my goals and grow into a researcher who contributes to society. //End//
