미세플라스틱이 인체와 생물에 미치는 영향 밝힌다
- 겐트대학교-국립환경과학원, 미세플라스틱 연구 협력 업무협약(MOU) 체결

17일, 겐트대학교(총장 페트라 드 수터)와 국립환경과학원(원장 박연재)이 미세플라스틱 분야 연구 협력을 위한 업무협약을 체결했다.
겐트대학교 글로벌캠퍼스에서 열린 이번 협약식에는 페트라 드 수터(Petra De Sutter) 겐트대학교 총장, 박연재 국립환경과학원장, 한태준 겐트대학교 글로벌캠퍼스 총장, 그리고 콜린 얀센(Colin Janssen) 마린유겐트 소장 등 관계자가 참석한 가운데 진행됐다.
이번 협약은 페트라 총장의 한국 방문을 계기로 이뤄졌으며, 겐트대와 환경과학원이 상호 미세플라스틱 분야 연구에 협력하고 양 기관 국제 공동연구의 범위와 수준을 강화하기 위해 계획됐다.
페트라 드 수터 총장은 “미세플라스틱은 국경이 없는 세계적 문제”라며, “세계적 수준의 연구 역량을 갖춘 우리 대학과 한국 정부 최고의 환경연구기관이 힘을 합쳐 인류의 건강을 위협하는 미세플라스틱 문제 해결을 위해 최선을 다하겠다”고 말했다.
같은 날, 겐트대는 인천시와 해양 과학, 환경, 바이오 기술 연구와 인재 양성에 협력하기 위한 업무협약을 체결하기도 했다.
겐트대학교는 생명과학 및 바이오 분야에서 세계 30위권의 명성을 자랑하는 벨기에 국립대학으로 지난 2014년부터 인천 송도에 글로벌캠퍼스를 설립해 인재 양성과 연구에 힘쓰고 있다. 또한 산하기관으로 세계적인 해양 융복합 연구소인 '마린유겐트'의 분원, '마린유겐트 코리아'를 지난 2024년 설립해 대한민국의 실정에 맞는 다양한 해양 연구에 전념하고 있다. //끝//

On the 17th, Ghent University (Rector Petra De Sutter) and the National Institute of Environmental Research (President Yeon jae Park, NIER) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to cooperate in the field of microplastics research.
The signing ceremony, held at Ghent University Global Campus (GUGC), was attended by key officials including Ghent University Rector Petra De Sutter, NIER President Yeon jae Park, Ghent University Global Campus President Tae jun Han, and Marine@UGent Chairman Colin Janssen.

This agreement was facilitated by Rector Petra De Sutter’s visit to Korea and was planned to foster mutual cooperation in microplastics research between Ghent University and NIER, while strengthening the scope and quality of international joint research between the two institutions.
Petra De Sutter, Prof. Dr. Rector, stated, “Microplastics are a global issue that knows no borders. By combining the world-class research capabilities of our university with Korea’s top environmental research institute, we will do our best to resolve the microplastics issue that threatens human health.”
On the same day, Ghent University and Incheon Metropolitan City also signed an MOU regarding marine research, Environmental Studies, Applied Biotechnology and talent development.
Ghent University is a Belgian national university that boasts a global reputation, ranking in the top 30 worldwide in the field of life sciences and bio-technology. Since 2014, it has been dedicated to nurturing talent and conducting research by establishing a Global Campus in Songdo, Incheon. Furthermore, it established 'Marine@UGent Korea,' a branch of the world-renowned marine convergence research institute 'Marine@UGent', in 2024 to focus on various marine research tailored to the specific context of the Republic of Korea. //End//
