- 벨기에 플란더스 정부, 겐트대 주최…양국 산·학·연·정 관계자 120여 명 참석
벨기에 플란더스 총리실·외교청(Flanders Chancellery & Foreign Office)과 플란더스 투자무역청(FIT-Flanders Investment&Trade), 그리고 겐트대학교 글로벌캠퍼스가 공동 주최하는 ‘한국-벨기에 수교 125주년 기념 네트워킹 행사’가 16일 인천 송도 경원재에서 열렸다.
벨기에 플란더스 경제사절단의 방한을 계기로 마련된 행사에는 브루노 얀스(Bruno Jans) 주한 벨기에 대사, 페트라 드 수터(Petra De Sutter) 겐트대학교 총장, 그리고 한태준 겐트대학교 글로벌캠퍼스 총장을 비롯해 양국의 산업, 교육, 정부 관계자 120여 명이 참석한 가운데 진행됐다.
참석자들은 자연스러운 분위기에서 서로에 대해 알아가고, 비즈니스 파트너십을 강화하는 등 생산적인 소통을 이어갔다. 플란더스 경제사절단은 네트워킹 행사 외에도 겐트대학교 글로벌캠퍼스를 견학하고, 한국에 본사를 둔 글로벌 제약·바이오 기업 여러 곳을 방문하기도 했다.
벨기에는 1901년 수호통상조약 체결을 시작으로 대한민국과 오랜 역사적 인연을 이어왔으며, 대한민국 정부 수립 직후 이를 가장 먼저 승인한 국가 중 하나이다. 또 벨기에는 6·25전쟁 당시 전투지원국 중 하나로 연인원 3,498명을 파병한 혈맹이자 전통적 우방국이다.
최근 한국과 벨기에는 정치, 경제, 교육 등 다양한 분야에서 긴밀한 관계를 유지하고 있다. 특히 2014년 인천 송도에 개교한 겐트대학교 글로벌캠퍼스와 2024년 설립한 마린유겐트 코리아(Marine@UGent Korea)는 지금까지 양국 협력의 상징이자 소통의 가교로서 자리매김하고 있다.
페트라 드 수터 겐트대학교 총장은 “한국과 벨기에의 125년 우정은 교육과 첨단 연구 분야의 굳건한 협력을 통해 더욱 깊어지고 있으며, 겐트대학교는 앞으로도 글로벌 혁신 인재를 양성하는 핵심 파트너로 함께할 것”이라고 말했다.
한태준 총장은 “벨기에는 한국 기업들의 유럽 시장 진출을 위한 물류 허브 기능을 하며, 과학과 교육 등의 분야에서 협력이 활발하다”며 “이번 행사가 양국의 동반 성장을 위한 실질적인 교류의 장이 되었기를 기대한다”고 말했다.
겐트대학교 글로벌캠퍼스는 앞으로도 벨기에 본교 및 다양한 관계기관과 함께 양국 협력과 상호 번영을 위한 다양한 활동을 하겠다고 밝혔다. //끝//

Successful Completion of Networking Event Commemorating the 125th Anniversary of Diplomatic Relations Between Korea and Belgium

The ‘Networking Event Commemorating the 125th Anniversary of Diplomatic Relations Between Korea and Belgium,’ co-hosted by the Flanders Chancellery & Foreign Office, Flanders Investment & Trade (FIT), and Ghent University Global Campus, was held on the 16th at Gyeongwonjae in Songdo, Incheon.
Organized on the occasion of the Belgian Flanders Economic Mission's visit to Korea, the event took place with the attendance of over 120 officials from industry, education, and government of both countries, including Bruno Jans, Belgian Ambassador to Korea; Petra De Sutter, Rector of Ghent University; and Han Tae-jun, President of Ghent University Global Campus.
The attendees continued productive communication in a natural atmosphere, getting to know one another and strengthening business partnerships. In addition to the networking event, the Flanders Economic Mission toured the Ghent University Global Campus and visited several global pharmaceutical and bio companies headquartered in Korea.
Starting with the signing of the Treaty of Amity and Commerce in 1901, Belgium has maintained a long historical connection with the Republic of Korea, being one of the first countries to recognize the South Korean government immediately after its establishment. Furthermore, Belgium is a blood ally and a traditional friend, having dispatched a total of 3,498 troops as one of the combat support nations during the Korean War.
Recently, Korea and Belgium have maintained close relations in various fields, including politics, the economy, and education. In particular, Ghent University Global Campus, which opened in Songdo, Incheon, in 2014, and Marine@UGent Korea, established in 2024, have firmly positioned themselves as symbols of bilateral cooperation and bridges for communication.
Petra De Sutter, Rector of Ghent University, stated, “The 125-year friendship between Korea and Belgium is deepening through solid cooperation in education and cutting-edge research, and Ghent University will continue to stand together as a key partner in nurturing global innovative talent.”
Taejun Han Campus President said, “Belgium serves as a logistics hub for Korean companies to enter the European market, and cooperation is highly active in fields such as science and education. We expect this event to have served as a venue for practical exchange for the mutual growth of both countries.”
Ghent University Global Campus announced that it will continue to carry out diverse activities for bilateral cooperation and mutual prosperity in collaboration with the main campus in Belgium and various related organizations. //End//
