17일, 겐트대학교 글로벌캠퍼스(총장 한태준)를 중심으로 국내 14개 기관이 '호라이즌 유럽(Horizon Europe)' *사업 참여를 위한 업무협약식을 가졌다.
 
인천글로벌캠퍼스에서 열린 이번 협약식에는 황효진 인천광역시 글로벌도시 정무부시장, 문경복 옹진군수, 주우종 강화군 경제산업국장, 윤원석 인천경제자유구역청장, 김문해 한국분석과학연구소 대표, 이기웅 동원F&B 연구원장, 홍대의 Mondrian AI 대표, 신경태 시니스트 대표, 김찬호 씨드에프앤에스 대표, 그리고 최준호 형지엘리트 대표 등 산·학·연·관을 아우르는 관계자 50여 명이 참석한 가운데 진행됐다.
 
인천광역시, 강화군, 옹진군, 그리고 인천경제자유구역청이 행정 및 지원을 담당하고, 한국건설생활환경시험연구원, 한국과학기술연구원 강릉분원 천연물연구소, 그리고 한국분석과학연구소가 연구 및 시험을 지원하며, 동원F&B, 형지엘리트 등 기업이 연구 결과 실용화 추진을 담당한다. 뿐만 아니라 Mondrian AI, 시니스트, 씨드에프앤에스 등 AI·IT기업들도 기술지원에 나섰다. 다양한 기관이 뭉쳐 하나의 팀이 된 이번 프로젝트의 총괄 기획 및 운영은 겐트대 글로벌캠퍼스와 마린유겐트 코리아가 담당한다. 이로써 연구와 혁신을 공동목표로 국내 14개 기관의 컨소시엄이 공식 출범했다.
 
더불어 벨기에, 덴마크, 아일랜드, 스웨덴, 프랑스 등 해외 7개국 12개 기관이 프로젝트를 지원할 예정이며, 이들 기관과 활발한 협의를 이어가고 있다.
 
이번 업무협약을 통해 사업 참여 및 협력 의지를 다진 컨소시엄은 18일, '호라이즌 유럽'에 사업제안서를 제출할 예정이며, 연구 과제 선정 결과는 2026년 3월 공개될 전망이다.
 
'호라이즌 유럽'에서 제시한 연구 주제는 “혁신적이고 탄소감축 및 고부가가치 응용을 위한 지속가능 거대조류(해조류) 배양 시스템: 재배 및 최적화된 생산 체계”이며, 겐트대 글로벌캠퍼스를 비롯한 컨소시엄은 연구와 협력을 통해 'AI-IOT-ICT 기반의 해조류 기반 바이오경제 플랫폼'을 구축하고 지속 가능한 '순환형 바이오리파이너리' **를 개발할 예정이다.
 
겐트대 글로벌캠퍼스는 이번 프로젝트를 'OASIS 프로젝트'로 명명했다. 차세대 해조류 스마트팜을 국제 실증하는 것이 핵심이며, 한국, 유럽, 뉴질랜드 등 8개국이 협력해 육상 기반 해조류 양식과 바이오리파이너리를 검증하는 국제 공동 연구이다. 연구 과정에서 연간 1,000억 원 이상의 경제효과와 500개 이상의 일자리를 창출할 수 있을 것으로 예상된다.
 
한태준 총장은 “이번 프로젝트는 연구와 혁신을 공동가치로 삼아 수많은 국내외 기관이 뜻을 같이 했다는 것에 큰 의의가 있고, 연구과제 공모 선정 시 커다란 학술적, 경제적 가치를 창출할 수 있을 것으로 보고 있다”며 “겐트대 글로벌캠퍼스의 연구에 대한 열정과 8개국 26개 기관의 힘을 모아 연구과제 공모에 선정될 수 있도록 최선을 다하겠다”고 전했다.
 
연구과제 공모에 선정되면 2026년부터 본격적인 연구가 시작된다. '호라이즌 유럽' 측으로부터 100억 원 이상의 연구지원금을 받을 것으로 예상되며, 매칭펀드를 포함하면 그보다 많은 연구 예산을 확보할 수 있을 것으로 보인다.
 
겐트대학교 글로벌캠퍼스(Ghent University Global Campus)는 생명과학 및 바이오 분야에서 세계 30위권의 명성을 자랑하는 벨기에 겐트대학교의 인천 송도 소재 확장캠퍼스다. 최근 형지글로벌과 친환경 섬유 공동개발연구소를 설립하고, 인천수산자원연구소와 해양수산 발전 및 신산업 육성을 위한 공동연구를 협약하는 등 연구 중심 대학으로서 사회에 기여함과 동시에 글로벌 인재 육성에 힘쓰고 있다.
 
특히, 지난해 개소한 해양 융복합 연구소 '마린유겐트 코리아 (Marine@UGent Korea)'를 중심으로 해양 분야 글로벌 연구 허브로서의 위상을 지속적으로 강화해 나가고 있다. //끝//

Ghent University Global Campus Leads Launch of Consortium,
Takes on the World’s Largest Research and Innovation Program ‘Horizon Europe’

• 14 domestic institutions sign an MOU… 12 institutions from 7 overseas countries to participate

• Expected research funding exceeding KRW 10 billion if selected

• Building a ‘sustainable smart seaweed land-based aquaculture and biorefinery system’

On the 17th, led by Ghent University Global Campus (Taejun Han, Prof. Dr. Campus President), 14 domestic institutions held a memorandum of understanding (MOU) signing ceremony for participation in ‘Horizon Europe,’ the world’s largest multilateral research and innovation program with a budget of approximately KRW 150 trillion supported by the European Union (EU) from 2021 to 2027. Korea became an associated member of the program in July.

The signing ceremony, held at Incheon Global Campus, was attended by more than 50 representatives across industry, academia, research, and government, including Hyojin Hwang, Deputy Mayor for Global City of Incheon Metropolitan City, Kyungbok Moon, Mayor of Ongjin County, Woojong Joo, Director General of Economic and Industrial Affairs of Ganghwa County, Wonseok Yoon, Commissioner of Incheon Free Economic Zone Authority, Munhae Kim, CEO of Korea Institute of Analytical Science and Technology, Giwoong Lee, Head of Research at Dongwon F&B, Daeui Hong, CEO of Mondrian AI, Kyungtae Shin, CEO of Sinist, Chanho Kim, CEO of Seed F&S, and Junho Choi, CEO of Hyungji Elite.

Incheon Metropolitan City, Ganghwa County, Ongjin County, and the Incheon Free Economic Zone Authority will be responsible for administrative support, while the Korea Conformity Laboratories, Korea Institute of Science and Technology Gangneung Institute of Natural Products, and Korea Institute of Analytical Science and Technology will provide research and testing support. Companies such as Dongwon F&B and Hyungji Elite will promote commercialization of research results, and AI/IT companies including Mondrian AI, Sinist, and Seed F&S will provide technical support. Ghent University Global Campus and Marine@UGent Korea will oversee the overall planning and operation of the project. Through this, a consortium of 14 domestic institutions has been officially launched with research and innovation as its common goal.

In addition, 12 institutions from 7 overseas countries, including Belgium, Denmark, Ireland, Sweden, and France, are expected to support the project, and active discussions with them are underway.

Through this MOU, the consortium has strengthened its commitment to participate and cooperate in the project and plans to submit its proposal to ‘Horizon Europe’ on the 18th. The research project selection results are expected to be announced in March 2026.

The research topic presented by ‘Horizon Europe’ is “Sustainable macroalgae (seaweed) cultivation systems for innovation, carbon reduction, and high value-added applications: cultivation and optimized production systems.” The consortium, led by Ghent University Global Campus, plans to establish an “AI-IoT-ICT based seaweed bioeconomy platform” and develop an integrated process that produces high value-added substances from biomass of a sustainable “circular biorefinery” designed with zero waste generation.

Ghent University Global Campus has named this project the “OASIS Project.” Its core is to internationally demonstrate the next-generation smart seaweed farm, with 8 countries including Korea, Europe, and New Zealand cooperating to verify land-based seaweed aquaculture and biorefinery through international joint research. The research process is expected to generate more than KRW 100 billion in annual economic impact and create over 500 jobs.

Taejun Han, Prof. Dr. Campus President stated, “The significance of this project lies in the fact that numerous domestic and overseas institutions have joined together with research and innovation as a shared value. If selected, we expect to create significant academic and economic value,” adding, “With Ghent University Global Campus’s passion for research and the combined efforts of 26 institutions from 8 countries, we will do our utmost to be selected for this research project.”

If selected, full-scale research will begin in 2026. The project is expected to receive more than KRW 10 billion in research funding from ‘Horizon Europe,’ and with matching funds included, an even larger research budget may be secured.

Ghent University Global Campus (GUGC), located in Songdo, Incheon, is the extended campus of Ghent University in Belgium, which is ranked among the world’s top 30 in life sciences and biotechnology. Recently, GUGC has established a joint eco-friendly fiber development research center with Hyungji Global, and signed a joint research agreement with Incheon Fisheries Resources Research Institute for marine and fisheries development and fostering of new industries. As a research-oriented university, GUGC contributes to society while fostering global talent.

In particular, GUGC has been continuously strengthening its position as a global research hub in the marine field, centered around Marine@UGent Korea, a marine convergence research institute opened last year. //END//
